Reluctant Box

Description

So here is a box that I made for my Aunt for Mother's Day.
For some reason this box seemed to fight me every step of the way. You have already seen how I had to correct the miter cut on the top of the box.
I also had to install the hinges twice, the first time they were installed, they some how pinched the box in the back, causing it to be open by 1/4 of an inch all of the time, thus the hasp on the front. That, of course didn't work, so that's why I mounted the hinges a second time. Also, take note that the hinges themselves had to be 'modified'. The decorative tab was to long for them to be mounted to the top portion of the box, so a little snip was required.
The original sides of the box were to be Ambrosia Maple, though when I drilled the first hole for the barrel hinges, I cut through into the inside of the box... Oak, yeah, oak would look just great with the Purpleheart.
The spines (Purpleheart wedges in the corners of the oak box, if they are know by another name, please let me know) those were planned down to thin, so extra glue and three coats of Tung Oil.

All in all I don't think the box turned out that bad.

The top of the box is Purpleheart with Padauk. The box itself is Oak with Purpleheart spines. The removable Trays are oak with one having a Padauk handle, and the other a Walnut. The second Padauk handle cracked apart when I was sanding it... Don't worry, no tools in the garage learned how to fly during the construction of this project. I didn't have enough Walnut for two handles, and the other Padauk I had was also riddled with cracks... More color n stuff is always good, right.
I had to use Cedar as the hidden panel material, I didn't have a 12" oak board lying around.

Comments are always welcome.

I have to thank Peter L. for educating me on the importance of 'finishing' a project, and introducing me to Scrapers and Tung Oil.

You got to love it when a project fights you the entire time you build it. I have had a few of those. In the end I seem to like those projects better as you remember all the little things you had to do to make it work right.
